ABYA YALA - LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN
A land full of (bio)diversity and abundant life, Abya Yala and the Caribbean is a region that holds approximately 60% of the world’s terrestrial life. Yes, it’s also one of the regions that has 9 biodiversity hotspots! But besides that, it is a region that congregates a diversity of people, colours, smells and cosmos visions…
From tropical islands and their endemic fauna and flora, to glaciers, mountains, savannahs, mighty rivers, tundras, wetland, oceans, wetlands, deserts and tropical rainforests… This region has it all!
The people - a part of nature - play an important role in the region. Indigenous and local communities have been defending nature since the beginning of colonization. They are responsible for the vast knowledge that, still today, is crucial for science and the protection of the earth for all!
Our team wants to connect, engage and support youth all around the Abya Yala and Caribbean region, through event organization, advocacy, storytelling, campaigning, and partnerships.
Abya Yala? What is this?
Abya Yala means living and flourish land in the Dulegaya language. The Dule or Guna People use Abya Yala to designate the land known as Latin America and the Caribbean.
Why we use it? We believe it’s a word that emphasize that this region is Indigenous land.

The anti-government protests in Colombia started on April 28th and are now entering their 3rd week. It all started with the announcement of an unpopular tax reform by President Ivan Duque. The law would drastically affect the working class, expanding taxes to citizens, business owners, food and sales. After an incredibly challenging year for many due to COVID-19, the demonstrations were huge. On May 2nd, after 5 days of violence in the streets across the country…
People are part of the nature, and unlikely the common speech says, not all people are responsible for the climate and biodiversity crisis the world is facing! There’s actually people who have always protected and lived in harmony with nature, those people are Indigenous, local, Quilombola communities and other groups who understand the importance of nature…
The ecological footprint of being called the “Country with the largest oil reserves in the world”, is still present on the coasts. More than half a century of oil production has given Venezuela great economic wealth at the cost of environmental degradation. Due to it’s geo-strategic location…
Dive in as we share some regional examples of communities living adjacent to forests as well as stories from youth who work with forest and forest-communities around the world!
Increasingly, the traditional territories of Indigenous communities in Venezuela have become areas where Colombian Guerrillas, illegal miners and Venezuelan military forces openly cooperate to mine, coercing them to destroy their own ancestral lands, resulting in a large migration to neighboring countries, most notably Brazil. And yes, you read it right. The crises that Venezuelan Indigenous communities are facing are so devastating that they have no option but to go to the very same country that is all over main stream media because of the environmental crisis.
